Neutral Salt Bath Heat Treating of Tool Steels
- The neutral salt bath heat treat method offers advantages over other methods of hardening and tempering.
  
  The salt medium is brought to a molten state via a conduction furnace. The parts are immersed in the molten solution, where heat is transferred directly by contact of the parts to the molten salt. This raises the core temperature of the part at approximately the same rate as the outside surface. This allows for uniform heat distribution throughout the part. This method of heat treat is well suited to parts with complex geometries and changing cross sections.
  
  A major advantage to this method is that the parts are fully immersed in the salt bath, therefore eliminating contact with any air, eliminating the problems of oxidation, scaling, and decarburization.
